Ringworm is a contagious infection also called tinea corporis that occurs on the surface of the skin. It is caused by various types of fungus, similar to those that cause athlete’s foot. The name comes from the characteristic ring that appears on the infected person’s skin. The condition has nothing to do with actual worms. School-age children are commonly affected.
